Slumdog Millionaire

Some or even most of the Indian population is disgruntled with the harsh reality being potrayed in Slumdog Millionaire. But I feel they have completely missed the point. They are viewing the movie very literally and are not able to see what the movie makers were trying to portray and why its a truly great movie.

Slumdog isn't about an "indian" movie. It is just set in India with a story from there. The story of Slumdog if you see, can be from any part of the world. They could have done the same thing in Thailand for instance. I also agree that all foreign directors show slums, but thats how it is.

I felt good about this movie, coz they brought out the real India in it.
That we are optimist, we never give up and the whole country unites when need be. Be it cricket, terrorism or Who wants to be a Millionaire. No one has ever captured this before

The movie has worked, because -

1. the direction was excellent, indian directors don't have the same technique like Danny Boyle does.

2. Movies like Lagaan are for Indian audiences, it does not have universal appeal. Audiences need to relate to a movie and they did with this one.

3. Music was excellent . Agreed, Jai Ho wasn't that good, but Rahman won for Original Score too, not just for one song. So Hats off to him

4. Finally its a underdog coming out as a winner movie, such movies rarely miss the mark. Everyone likes to see a normal person or even underprivileged person win, anyday !

I am myself from Mumbai and there is nothing wrong in accepting that , yes we do have slums and poverty . But see what the movie shows, its very important. People in slums are not necessarily unhappy , they also live their lives best way possible. Finally you see them smiling in any situation. Thats the true spirit of India.

If it was a demeaning movie, veterans and serious actors like Anil Kapoor and Irfan Khan would have rejected it. And a patriot like Rahman wouldnt have agreed either.

Depends what you see , if you runaway from the truth, you might miss the meaning completely.

I love Slumdog Millionaire ! The British team has done a great job, still I wish it was made by Indians. That would have been awesome.

Hope we see that day too in our lifetime :)
